Friday Roundup – An Introduction to the SaaS Tattler

March 21, 2014 Pam McBride

This Friday we are going to do a little something different with our Friday Roundup. We are expanding it into the first edition of the SaaS 2.0 Tattler.

When we revisted the forecasts of the cloud and SaaS market (Forbes provided its own “Roundup of Cloud Computing Forecasts Update, 2013” which serves as a great reference), it occurred to us that there is so incredibly much going on in this space. From writings and learnings, to product tracking and deal intelligence for VCs, and of course funding news from Crunchbase. Even some of products we are using or referencing for the Tattler are SaaS companies!

The SaaS 2.0 Tattler will roundup the top 5 in various SaaS categories each week and eventually it will be delivered right to your inbox for a great weekend read. Here’s our first kick at the can – please let us know what you think.

Top 5 SaaS 2.0 Insights of the Week

SaaS Growth

OneLogin has ramped up it’s executive to keep pace with their growth because of companies mass migration to the cloud and the challenges faced by CIOs. And they’ve added a VP of Customer Success to their arsenal too.

When Jason Lemkin comes out with a blog post, it’s a must read and a no-brainer to make the Friday Roundup. This one is all about Room at the Bottom and not having to dethrone the leader to win. “CRM got a little sleepy for a while.  It seemed pretty tapped out around ’08/’09, in fact.  But the interesting thing is it turns out it’s just Getting Good.”

It would be remiss to highlight SaaS Growth without including valuable insights from the SaaS Growth Strategies blog by Lincoln Murphy. Regularly read, highly tweetable and always a valuable read – his posts are evergreen. This particular post talks about the two main concerns SaaS vendors looking to ramp customer acquisition face and features Greg Piertuszynski. Find out how to chose your best customers to interview in 15 minutes!

If there is one presentation that sums up the state of SaaS and its challenges, it’s in this post from Compass. I am sure every SaaS company, regardless of stage can relate to the David vs Goliath analogies and strategies found within.

 CRM

This is a story about Geico – but it’s also a story that contains insights for every new SaaS startup. It talks to timing, personalization and seamlessness and about capitalizing on an opportunity to increase customer lifetime value.
